Doll Haul: VW Van!
Okay, so, while other little girls in the ‘80’s wanted their Barbie to cut loose in a bright pink convertible, I was fantasizing about a VW Van for my dolls. Heck, I wanted one for myself. I never ended up buying one, though, mores the pity. No, I ended up buying my mother’s 1967 Plymouth Valiant, lovingly dubbed the “Jolly Green Giant”, and it was very much like driving a boat, including the lack of power steering. Haha!
To me, the VW Van represents what I can only imagine were the best parts of the ‘60’s & ‘70’s – rebellion, freedom, hippy culture, colorful art, and amazing music. I’m not saying there weren’t issues from that time period; there absolutely were, and I feel fortunate that I can look back and cherry pick what I like from that era, as opposed to living through it – warts and all.
Recently, I found one on Ebay, a VW van that is – a second-hand “Maxi Steffi Love Hawaii Camper Van”. On amazon, they only have a single one in stock and it’s £79 (I’m putting an affiliate link in here just in case anyone decides to take the plunge anyway 😉 ). Looks like they came out around 2011, which explains why I missed them in the first place as I was in my “I’m too adult to play with Barbie but secretly want to” phase. Much like briefly going goth, I’m just glad it’s over with.
I’m not sure exactly what I’m going to do with the van now that I’ve gotten my sticky fingers on it, it’ll likely involve an air brush and some painting when my hand-tremors allow for it. As of this moment, it’s just resting on a shelf, waiting, and all mine :) I’ll update when something happens with it. I have about 10,000 ongoing projects, though, so I advise you not hold your breath while waiting.
Thanks for stopping in. Stay conscious, and I’ll see you next time.
