Tall Gal BMR Review
Today I’m continuing to review some of the dolls from the second wave of the BMR dolls. For those that missed my reviews of the BMR1959 dolls, you can find the Curvy Brunette (AA) here, the Green-Haired Ken here, the Manbun Ken here, and the wave 2 Dimpled Ginger Ken here. Next under the microscope, the tall, Asian woman:
Mattel has continued to answer my pleadings for variety in body type on fully articulated dolls with this wave and I’m really pleased with it. Each one of the BMR dolls offers something new and interesting, so there’s something for everyone. I wonder if there will be a tall Ken? A petite Ken? A curvy Ken? OMG, I’d love a curvy Ken. Anyway, where was I? Ah yes, this lanky lovely. Let’s start with her boots, shall we?
They look like something out of a science fiction film from the ‘80’s, again I’m reminded of “Bladerunner” or “The Fifth Element” (both awesome movies in their own right). As you can see, the foot of the boot is actually quite large compared to the doll’s tiny foot. I’m wondering if this isn’t to make it easier to share between doll types.
Turns out, these boots defy the myth that sharing shoes is impossible between curvy and non-curvy dolls:
That’s my curvy made to move doll wearing the boots.
I enjoy posting yet another example of where the naysayers are, in fact, wrong about their assumption that curvy barbie cannot share footwear with her svelte cousins.
Her coat looks almost like a rain covering to me, perhaps it’s the colors or fabric used:
Either way, it’s not a piece I see myself using all that much, though it is interesting.
Sadly, she lacks pierced ears, so our last accessory is a pair of very plastic barrettes that do absolutely nothing for me.
With working from home, admittedly I have extra time. I’ve got some primer waiting for me at the post office - so some of these threats of upcycling plastic pieces may become a reality in the coming days.
While it’s covered in the BMR1959 logo, I’m loving this crop top and shorts combination, I think the black and white is the way to go if you need to wear something plastered with a brand:
These pieces are both made of stretchy material, so they can fit a variety of body types, which is always a bonus for yours truly as I do love variety in my dolls.
But what about the doll herself? The facemold is “Tango” and not the first time it’s been used on a doll, though it’s one of the few times I’ve liked it:
I was on the fence about whether or not I liked her face while looking at her official photo. Turns out, in natural light, she’s actually quite lovely. I really think Mattel should use natural light for their promotional pictures.
She sports full brows that I wish had a bit more detail, there seems to be something “off” about them, full lips complete with a flattering gloss finish, and a bit of cheeky green eye shadow over her lovely, dark eyes.
Like the curvy BMR doll this Asian beauty has long, luxurious hair and unlike the males, it’s not full of product. Huzzah!
I’m unable to capture the softness of her blonde streaked hair in pictures, but trust me when I say it’s extremely soft. I wish all Barbies had hair this nice to touch.
I would have preferred her without the streaks, but I had them when I was in my 20’s, far be it for me to hold it against a doll for going through the same regrettable phase.
That hair is just amazing, you’re going to adore her tresses. I imagine it’ll be pretty cooperative for styling as well, looking forward to playing around with it.
But what about her body? This is my first tall, fully articulated doll, I’m excited:
Based on the side by side comparison (above) I think she’s simply a made to move doll, scaled up to be taller. Thankfully she hasn’t been stretched and made too thin when compared to the already svelte yoga dolls.
As you can see, she’s fully articulated and, unlike my poor ginger, her hips thankfully aren’t loose enough to do the painful disjointed pose he’s able to accomplish:
Lastly, lest I forget, this lovely lady has a green manicure:
Again, overall, I’m very pleased with the route Mattel has gone with the BMR line of dolls. I love this doll and I’m so glad to have a tall, made to move gal at last. She may end up repainted, just more human, but still true to her appearance as she is now.
I have one final doll out of the second wave to review, sadly the fourth doll ordered from Mattel never arrived (still waiting, hopefully someday). I’ve reached out to customer support, but there’s not much they can do other than ask me to wait.
Thanks for stopping in and I hope you enjoyed this review. If I missed anything you’d like to see more clearly, just let me know in the comments below.
