Cake Boss
Hello! It's cake season! Wait, that's a thing right?
^_^ I hope so, because I've been working on creating several cake variations for quite awhile now and I *think* what I've come up with will please the eye.
As you may or may not know, I work almost exclusively with found objects. This makes certain projects (like cakes!) more than a little challenging if I want to create something better than just a painted cylinder.
First off, I've created four, fruit themed tea cakes:
The underlying core of each is a simple assemblage of cardboard disks with plenty of glue to smooth out any rough edges and the frosting is made from desiccant media. The leaves and fruit toppers are made from other items kicking around in my bits box as well. With a little bit of trimming and some paint, the transformation from disposable to delectable is complete!
Next is a more ambitious project, my three tiered autumnal themed cake. The base was constructed in similar fashion to the tea cakes using cardboard, glue, and a few other random bits. The branches were made with wire I coated with a particular type of malleable paint. After shaping, drying, trimming, and some more paint, we have our branches. Affixing them was a bit tricky and required lots of tiny adjustments, but in the end, I think it worked out (and I think Heather agrees). The leaves were cut from an old paint tube, glued in place, then painted a complementary gold.
Last but not least, we have what I refer to as "The Bonus Cake", so named because it wasn't planned, but came together during the last week or so of my self imposed shipping deadline. While doing a bit of spring cleaning, I discovered a perfectly sized bottle cap from some outdated allergy pills and thought "Hmm..." Before long, I'd cut out two circles of cardboard (from a cracker box, I think?) to seal the underside and mask the text on top of the cap. After gluing them in place (and giving them a day to set up), I applied several coats of acrylic paint.
Next, I twisted some discarded plastic into a semblance of frosting and affixed it to the top and base, then applied the floral patterns. A few coats of sealant later, and viola! Bonus Cake. =)
This is my second (third?) foray into the miniature baking world and I have to say, that even though it's challenging to create such projects utterly from scratch, it's also incredibly rewarding. My hope is you enjoy them as much as I did making them. Bon appetite! ^_^
Our resident doll blogger, PE, told me she doesn’t have a favorite…but I think she just might…
Anyway, happy Trans Visibility day…err I mean Easter. Yes, they fell on the same day this year. March 31st is always Trans Visibility Day, ever year, Easter doesn’t always fall on the 31st. ”Hey, I don’t understand how calendars work” isn’t a flex. Have a good one.
