Musings By M
In a recent conversation with my significant other, we talked about what inspires our hobbies, what informs our choices, and what drives our passions. I thought it might be fun to share some of those things here on the blog the woman behind Moira and Eve agreed.
I’m new(ish) to the doll community. Sort of. I grew up with a lot of older cousins and, because we were poor, I got a lot of hand-me-down toys: action figures. Some may reject the idea they’re closely related, I disagree. They may not be the same on the surface, but they’re identical in function.
Each are small figures one can accessorize with all manner of clothing and equipment options. Light saber or purse, both are equal in their cool factor and yes, the popularity of either greatly depends on their unique style. Rey or Poppy? Both kick ass.
Both are also the ultimate external manifestation of our internal imaginings. Think about it. Whether its Jacinda posing for an art show or Blur heroically blasting some Decepticon scum, they're both the next best thing to telepathy. My ideas takes shape through these physical figures and are transmitted directly to you. All without saying a word. That's awesome.
Imagination has been my life's refuge. I love escapism and anyone who doesn't is far more put together than I. Or they've never given in to the joy that comes with living vicariously through another character.
I love theatre and roleplaying. I love playing in a band in front of a live audience. All of it let's me be some alternate version of myself, live a life impossible because, really, unless you're Slash or Charliz, none of us have the time to be *that* busy. The Land of Make Believe wasn't invented by Mr. Rogers, but he sure did a lot to validate its worthiness.
We should all be happy if we can conserve even a fraction of that childhood example and carry it forward into the rest of our lives.
You know what else is cool? Of course you do, you've your own preferences. Ahem, you know what else *I* think is cool? The myriad of design crossroads in the doll hobby! I'm a creative sort. I dabble in a bit of everything and I'm continually impressed at how many of my other hobbies cross paths with this one.
I paint, I write, I game, and am a trained draftsman. Know who designs almost everything? Draftsmen! From the interior design to constructing the house and all the furniture that goes in it, I get to express myself in every corner of this hobby! I'm even pretty damn handy with a sewing machine, thanks to a past job at a textiles factory. I can add fashion designer to my 1/6th scale resume as well.
I'm a doll hobby polymath!
I suppose my point is this: The doll hobby is one of the richest crossroads of artistic and imaginative fun I've ever encountered and am super happy I was introduced. I love it.
Now if I can only get my hands on all the equipment I need to construct my fortified fashion mansion, complete with runway and transformable dance floor...
