Uhm, No
Recently I read a Vogue article titled “The first Indian Barbie is about to change the world”. Excuse me? Do I want the world to change? Absolutely, it’s way past time. But your Indian barbie is, in fact, not the first Indian Barbie from Mattel. Nor is it the first OOAK Indian Barbie.
How do I know? I have Google at my fingertips. “OOAK Indian Barbie” or even just “Indian Barbie” and the images flood in.
Excerpt: “Her skin is TINTED, her eyes big, and brows bold. She wears her jhumkas & bangles proud with her power suit. She is ready to take on the world. Her identity is hers.”
Does that remind you of anyone? Hmmm. Nomi pops up on that page multiple times, for a reason.
Please, Rituparna Som, even though you’re a writer for Vogue, stop ignoring the work of thousands of artists who have created gorgeous Indian dolls for years. All it takes is one tiny google search, shouldn’t be too much to ask of a professional.
For anyone who want to see more Nomi pictures, I got you:
She doesn’t seem bothered in the least. She’s confident and doesn’t need Vogue, or anyone else, to confirm how amazing she is.
I hope you’re all having a great weekend.
