Creatable World

I don’t know about you, but when I read about the launch of customizable, gender neutral junior dolls, I was excited.

Other people, like a particularly “offended” fellow on Facebook screamed (all caps) that you either have a penis, making you a boy, or a vagina, making you a girl, and that’s that. I was almost gleeful as I wrote my reply pointing out that Barbie is smooth and, unless altered, has neither below the belt. Unsurprisingly, he never replied – trolls rarely do.

For me, I grew up bouncing between wanting to wear pretty dresses and having my hair in French braids to being a total “Tom Boy”, complete with muddy clothes, all in the span of a single day. I didn’t worry about what was feminine or masculine, I was just myself.

Kids are figuring out who they are as they discover the world, they don’t need the pressure to conform to society’s rules about what is acceptable for males and females. Let them be kids, whether it means pretty, frilly dresses or short hair – or both at the same time. They’ll sort it if we leave well enough alone.
