Eve's Reading Window

I’ve always been a fan of window seats, but never lived in a place that had one.  I’m so pleased I get to decorate Eve’s living space to my heart’s desire…well, within budget, that is.

This diorama piece—another part of my overall Christmas present—had quite the adventure before reaching its new home.  In the chaos of the holiday season, the postal service managed to lose the documentation, the parcel itself went off the grid for over a week, and the process of having it shipped back to its country of origin began.  I’m just glad it got here in one piece.

Here’s the item all by its lonesome, before adding any details:

Even stand alone, it’s very nice, and there’s a good deal of attention to detail.  The scaling is ideal, with shelves deep and wide enough to display tiny items, and the two drawers at the bottom are fully functional, with the added bonus of adorable little knobs.

For now, I’ve tucked some of Eve’s smaller accessories in the drawers so that they’re easier to keep track of.  Unfortunately, I’ve managed to lose one of her shoes already; I’d like to keep it as the only casualty. Dare to dream, am I right? I’ll have lost 90% of her shoes within a year, I’m depressingly certain.

As to the changes I’ve made, I just added a few accessories. if I had a window seat I’d want it to be not only visually appealing, but also inviting. Pillows seemed like the right way to go. I, very poorly, hand-sewed a couple of large cushion seats and a few throw pillows from some leftover quilting material. They’re nowhere near perfect, but I like them for now, and they look comfy enough for curling up with a good book.

Speaking of books, I adorned the shelves with little knickknacks, but by far my favorite items were the books. Most I found online, but a few of them are books from our shelves, scanned in, shrunk, printed by my hubby at his workplace, and glued onto cardboard. It’s an easy craft with a pretty nice result. Unfortunately, I ran out of books before the shelves were entirely filled, so I’ll have to ask my hubby to print out some more for me after his holiday ends.

Last, but certainly not least, I added a view.

Because of the size, I had this city-scape view printed out at a local shop on glossy paper. They provided me with a large envelope, which turned out to be useful. I cut an opening on the front of it, showing some of the picture contained within, then simply slid the envelope behind the window, pinning it against the wall. That way, if I need to change the photo, it’s as easy as sliding the new photo into the envelope, in front of the current photo. I have a “rainy day” look with the same view.
