Handmade & Upcycled

Handmade & Upcycled

30 minutes or less? Hardly. ^_^

Over a year ago, PE asked if could make her a playscale pizza with her favorite toppings. Being a fan of all things miniature and a good challenge, I readily agreed. I had no idea what I was getting into.

I wanted to make these using as much upcycled materials as possible. I began by gluing paperboard discs together until I reached the appropriate thickness, then used some heavy-body fabric paint to add the crust, texture, and hide the seams. After that, I base-coated them with block-out white and worked in the various colors common to pizzas the world over.

I might add this project began with the intention of creating a single pie, but somehow ended up being twenty-two. I had ideas! Foolish me.

Next, the ingredients. After much experimentation, I discovered cotton-swab sticks, pepper seeds, stretch bandages, and minced garlic could be turned into olives, pepperoni and mushrooms, sausage, and chicken, respectively. Different bits of card stock and even those stretchy straps from surgical masks found their way into the mix, too.

If you've never coordinated tweezers and scissors in effort to shape a playscale mushroom, then you're missing out on TONS of frustration. My pizzeria nearly vetoed all mushroom orders several times.

Each ingredient was handmade, hand painted, and singularly glued in place. After all was assembled, a coat of varnish was applied to protect the work and viola, pizzas!

Now if I could only eat them, I'd make a hundred more! ^_^ Except perhaps that hot pink pizza, not sure even I, a major pizza fan, would eat that one.

Have a delightful weekend.
